It’s as much a game plan issue as it is a Hurn not understanding the game plan issue. You can’t blame a plan when it is not followed.

We looked much better in the middle quarters taking the kicks into the corridor etc. The dogs play high tempo and it will be hard to crack it, with our game plan you just need to persist.

If Hurn doesn’t take 10x kicks down the line and 4 smothered inside d50 it’s a different game. We lost all confidence after being belted in the first quarter and tried to make it up from there.

Putting that aside, this midfield should never get belted like that so it’s far from the only reason.

On your point re: Hurn, you're right. Statistically we are the worst team at transitioning the ball from D50 to a score.

However, no midfielder had more than 20 touches. What in the actual fuck is that?!

Our momentum in the 3rd (ie. all 3 goals) stemmed from centre clearances.

Our first two goals was also attributable to stoppage clearances and the ensuing chaos/Naitanui winning the contested ball. Our best contested player cannot be our ruckman who has to be managed through the rest of his career FFS.

If we can't generate scores outside of Naitanui winning the ball and/or feeding our mids, or a contested mark by our forwards then we've got serious problems both game plan and personnel wise.

Approximately 20% of our scores last season were from centre clearances which was viewed as an anomaly relative to the rest of the comp. I don't know what it is this year but it'd probably be close if not even higher.

I'm actually surprised WCE are top 8 as they really haven't looked very good from the games I've seen. Richmond win was alright but that was at home against a Richmond that is look very weak right now, just seem behind the usual standard.

We are lucky to be top 8 for sure, but we could equally as easily be top 4. Choked leads to St kilda and Essendon and a close loss to bulldogs in round 2. We were dog shit in all of them but definitely winnable.

We have been incredibly frustrating to watch, but have also been decimated by injury. This week was easily our best lineup on paper which is probably why it was so disappointing to see us spud it up.

5 changes in a week doesn’t help. Kelly was clearly underdone IMO but I also think the whole midfield don’t gel together very well.

The whole midfield is underdone and carrying 3 players on rotation limits takes a huge toll on the rest of the squad.

Always a very good chance of being exposed by an elite midfield like the Dogs who are also accustomed to roving to the opposition ruck more than anyone else and thus also largely negated NicNat's influence.

It's hard to really work out how much is game plan and how much is personnel right now with the sheer amount of injuries to key players but there is a lot of redundancy in the midfield. Kelly is a poor man's Shuey, Redden is a poor man's Yeo and the other guys just aren't that good and when the wealthy versions are both on heavy rotation limits they basically aren't themselves either.

Still, if they cling to the 8 and get healthy they're a genuine threat in a season where no team has really looked great except for maybe Melbourne and, well, they're Melbourne so their mental fragility is going to be an issue until they prove it isn't.

Offset by the fact we're first in goal kicking accuracy, contested marks, scores from centre clearances, hitouts to advantage and second to the Dogs (26%) for marks per inside 50 (25%), with a big gap to the next.

So basically we're utter dogshit by some measures which is offset by being the best in others. So split the difference and scrape into the 8.

Basically you're really good at all the single effort stats and really bad at the ones that require the most running and effort. Again, gets back to playing with so many underdone players for mine that just compounds into everyone being less fresh than the opposition teams are, especially as the game wears on.

Prior to that I reckon Bulldogs v Essendon round 21 with the Terry Wallace super flood to deny the dons a chance at a perfect season. All I can say is thank you flogs.
