Sam Darley is Treloar's best mate for what its worth. If anyone knows what happened, it'd be him. From his comments over the last few weeks I think the crux of it is, everything that Sam Edmund stated was factual. Buckley chose his words very very carefully in that tweet, I said at the time he didn't deny anything that Sam put forward and know we know why.

And the answer is yes and no... it's not as bad as I expected, though literally none of the changes that would actually help (fixing the existing ball/ruck rules, etc) are being made.

Man on the mark is whatever, there will be a ton of random 50s like there always are but otherwise minimal impact. Kick-in and rotations will not be noticeable changes for mine. No one pressures the kicker anyway. If they do go back to 20 minute quarters I'd actually call it a win overall.

The VFL though is fucked, imagine being the poor clint who has to sprint 70 metres to get to the square and I mean what happens if neither player bothers and thus both teams get a free against? Would love if the umpires

It's an utterly stupid rule that no one with a functional brain could think would be good in any way and yet here we are.

Man on the mark stuff just seems dumb, how are you not within your right to man space to your sides? They now have to wait for an umpire to call play on so it gives the player with the ball a huge advantage.

Also love the headline of "create Dustin Martin moments from the grand final" like that shit isn't capable of happening otherwise.

I predict players will just stop manning the mark. Stay a couple of metres behind the mark so you're not "on" the mark, then just be wherever you want to be horizontally. Coaches just aren't going to allow easy 45 degree kicks to be had every time.

They're also not going to suddenly allow the average and worse kicks to take those kicks on because of how much risk the turnover also entails. Especially the increasingly fatigued players who will be told to keep it down the line at all costs even more so now.

I'd love to know where this theory of fatigue equals exciting play equals scoring comes from. I mean watch one boxing fight with two unfit guys, they swing early and then it's just leaning on each other for the rest of the fight because they physically can't do any more. The AFL seems to think for some reason that their sport works differently to every other sport...

I mean how easy is it, if you want less stoppages and rolling mauls then maybe look at what causes that, hint: it's not a lack of fatigue, and change that and by change I mean remove all the "interpretation" and previous rule changes you've made in that area.

I can't believe they still haven't got rid of the ruck rule where you have to nominate.

Seriously, all these do is further complicate the game.

    Can't stand the AFL.

That's probably the biggest issue. They introduce a rule that doesn't work but for either ego or financial reasons they can't bring themselves to say "oh hey, that doesn't actually work, lets scrap it" but instead they have to build on it and add another rule change.

The man on the mark issue I have is not being able to replace the man on the mark, but agree with the above. You'd just sag and defend 15m or so behind the mark
We demand an investigation into the replacement of referee Rafshan Irmatov and his departure at a difficult time in such an important match. We ask for an examination of the grassland that was not suitable for the Syrian team, while Australian players seem to be wearing shoes that cling to the long grass, so we saw Syrian players fall during the game, while Australia's players are steady.

To me it seems they invented a rule that already exists. Mans on the mark are constantly infringing by going to the sides which they are not allowed to do as it is.

Na the umpires fuck it up by introducing the stupid East West not North South bullshit.

In reality it should be an arc/radius not a flat line.

Players always find ways to circumvent the rules. For example, you can't shepherd the man on the mark but how often do we see a player from the attacking team standing one step behind waiting to step in front as soon as his team mate moves off the line?

Not being able to change the man on the mark should in theory go some way to prevent some of the "protected area" 50s that occur between the forward 50 arcs. Also thank fuck i won't have to put up with umps shouting "East, West" repeatedly now.

Mason Cox career is done now he can't stand the mark for set shots

No wonder he was so vocal against the rule changes.

Will be rustled if game length doesn't go back to the normal next season.

Pretty worried they're going to go 18 minutes although that makes a 75 interchange cap pretty pointless given it was at 80 last year with 20min quarters.

Dumbest rule change of them all. The AFL makes these changes to try to make the game free flowing. Can't see how that can possibly happen if you force 30 players to be all within the centre area of the ground.

I mean it's even worse if every stoppage not only has to wait for everyone to get there, the rucks to nominate, the umpire to scratch his balls but also for a few guys to run back to the square so they're in position.
