    The outdoors thread

I'm sure I'm not the only person on here who enjoys a few outdoor activities. Bushwalking, climbing, kayaking, all that sort of shit. Share here (or just boast), nothing like a bit of adventure from time to time.

Today consisted of a couple of activities.

Firstly, checked out some abandoned railway tunnels up in Helensburgh. Pretty cool. Station was closed in 1914, the tracks extend a little way into the tunnel before ending. Muddy as anything inside, but and incredibly dark, but with our pissweak little torches it was kind of cool seeing the old brickwork up close.

About 100 metres or so in though you look up and there are glow worms everywhere. All over the roofer, all in a few little enclaves periodically along the sides. Awesome. I do not have a good enough camera to adequetely get the glow worms, but it was a cool spot. Love the old man made structure creeping back into nature like this

After that we went to do a bushwalk.

Original plan was this short, but difficult, loop walk I knew of. But after hitting a fork a kilometre in the road we decided to take the 6km walk up to a place called Maddens Plains.

And once we get there, it was basically a spot in the middle of two walks, so there was another 5 and a half km to Sublime Pt lookout, then another decent length down to the station to get a train back to the car.

It was a great walk though. The first part in particular was just constantly going off to the sides for look outs. E.g.

    Stanwell Park

    coalcliff.jpg
    Coalcliff

Surprisingly well maintained track, lot's of little signs regarding flora and fauna, but also a bit more on ecosystem function which I though was really good to see. The changes in vegetation type every now and again were really cool, little bands of rainforest and such.

Then arriving at Sublime Point gives a pretty sensational spot

Just before this, we get the least reassuring thing ever said to us by some guy. "Oh yeah, there's a couple of snake up ahead, watch out for them. Don't worry, they aren't pythons or anything, just little ones"
but also freaked out one person walking. Couldn't think of anything better than snakes that have been spotted being pythons, but little, possible brown snakes? Scary as shit.

Great day all in all, even got beers and burgers for tea.

Hopefully more can contribute to this thread! Actually felt really great to get out into the bush again for the first time in a while.

Went kayaking today at Fairfield, great day to be doing it. My paddling technique sucks though as I seem boss at dumping water on top of myself with each stroke (not massive amounts, but the water just runs down the paddles and right on top of me). Arms are feeling it a little now though.

Would like to go somewhere where you can go through some tunnels/caves, perhaps Warrandyte (?) - although the 'problem' is the stream is stronger I think so you can only go down and would need to have a car at a point to bring everything back.

Yeah love that. Run Coogee to Bondi and back occasionally. The bit around Gordons Bay is sick, and also really like the bit passing the cemetary. Just looking out to the horizon there is amazing.

Between Clifton and Coalcliff, but that photo tagged coalcliff is unfortunately shit, but it loops around there, from where those houses end. where that hill goes down, bottom of that angle. That bridge really is though

Just did a heap of walks through gorges in the Kimberleys. Was going to do a write up in the travel thread but might do it in here.

Will post a full trip log with photos in the next few weeks.

Red Bear or anyone else, have you ever tried white water rafting?

Friend suggested it a few weeks back, looks like it would be good fun.

Been a few times, would only bother again if the rapids were fucking shit up, usually to much of a leisurely paddle for mine.

I guess it would depend where you go/time of year? Looking at the pictures it looks like it would be hard to stay in the thing but they're probs pics from the best places to do it kinda thing.

Amongst other fun activities did a five day hike to the ancient Mayan city of El Mirador whilst I was in Guatemala. Wrote about it in the travel thread but here are a few pics from the jungle

Here is the horse and the mule that carried tha majority of our stuff (food and water mostly, as well as some other crap)

Couple of shots from my bad camera of monkeys in the tree tops

Frog on the jungle floor and a terrible shot of an ocellated turkey

Ongoing archaelogical work at the El Tigre complex

La Danta, tallest Mayan pyramid at about 72 m (and another terrible photo)

View of the jungle from the top of El Tigre

    Pretty awesome experience.

I've also been doing a bit of exploring around Sydney Harbour

Did walk at home last monday

Then today went out to Corin Dam and walked up stockyard spur (700m elevation gain in 2km). Clear blue skies and 15 degrees or so

    Pretty great

Esperance has the nicest beach in WA. Just about in Australia.
