I started running in May. I was terrible, still am really but have improved by around 8 mins since I started.

Still in no position to give advice but am happy to take some.

8 mins sounds decent, over what distance?

On building a base, probably depends what your goal is but I think the problem a lot of people fall into when running is they choose a run (5k, 10k etc) and they just do that over and over. Reality is you need to do a combination of distances, sprint/hill sprint interval style and fartlek style training to continually make improvements over any distance (or if its a sport related fitness)

The other thing is having your body in decent shape to allow yourself to put a lot of KM through it. Strength of feet, ankles, calves in particular if its longer distance, without good strength these will probably slow you down at some point with injury or soreness

Not doubting just doing the same thing consistently will see you improve a lot as a beginner but will plateau after a while too.

Ultimately with anything it's about consistency though

    Cheers yeah_nah

I run on my lunch break. Most days 4kms but I just had a bad week around 3.5kms.

I'm doing it 4 or 5 days a week. I'm doing ks around 6min20 on average.

I started cause I needed to get out of the house being in lockdown and working from home. Gave me a goal whcih has been great and I'm losing weight.

Is it really recommended to run every day? Not sure my body could handle it. I'm pretty spent after the 4th day in a row.

Pretty sure 4 to 5 days is recommend on most programs I've seen. You might get to 6 at peak if ur training for a marathon but I really doubt anyone recommends every day.

I hate running personally, I find it monotonous and only use it as a means to an end for sport purposes

While I love going to the gym I want to add a bit of purpose to health and fitness, so I'm thinking about getting into triathlons post-COVID-19 and figure with summer coming up, running and cycling is something I'll be able to do outside/foreveralone.

For beginners I saw mainly 3-4 days a week, basically day on then off but I suppose it depends where exactly you start and if you're doing the same distance each day or shorter and longer runs.

I started from scratch, was up to 5km and just trying to build on that slowly. I lost motivation as the weather got really shit and stage 4 lockdown came into play and stopped altogether. Can't say I really enjoyed it but was hoping to see some benefit when playing basketball (), did find having a podcast on at least help me focus on something else.

If you're not a swimmer then that's probably the hardest part of a triathlon. I'd say most could do the bike and run part with minimal training but the swim will legit fuck you

First step is to go and get your feet tested and get the right shoes, makes a massive difference to everything.

Get a proper warm down routine going as well. A roller can be a really good investment for this.

Then it really depends on what you're going for. If it's just practical running I'd work in a lot of sprint/HIIT/Hill/Beach work, it both keeps it a bit fresher by mixing it up but also really improves the speed and strength factors through the legs which then builds into other areas.

Like any exercise, routine is king or it all fades away.

Try and push yourself on distances as well but nothing extreme and remember there is no shame in a quick walk and then back into it.

I wouldn't run every day but there's no reason you can't do 5 or 6, especially if only doing 4km. Anything more than 10km and I'd start putting in some rest days as overtraining is a very real thing, even when running.

Also worth investing in a good set of headphones if you like music while running and either an app or training accessory so you can track speed so you can push yourself as that's the only way to really improve, let it tell you your pace and try and improve it.

Biggest thing is just getting into it and sticking to it, you'll be amazed how quickly you build the endurance.

Used this with one of the running apps Wogi mentioned a while back which was good as runmore would occasionally freeze or something for me so it was handy having the other one where I could set it to 5min interval updates.

Actually scrap that. Go do a triathlon and be a beast

You're not going to practice running just to tell a couple mates that you run. Run for an actual purpose, go sign up for some runs, plenty of 5k, 10k half marathons out there

Yeah the swim leg is fucked, worse because as a weak swimmer it's the first leg and it fucks you completely for the other legs as you're just trying to recover from almost drowning. Also never do a mixed swim or let the women's group catch you if they're starting right after because they're fucking savages, guys basically keep spaced and make it easy on everyone but the women just mow you down... alternatively, don't be a shit swimmer.

Bike leg is only an issue if there is a hilly circuit for the non-riders because you really need to train how to climb but realistically the bike is the worst leg to be best at as it's got the smallest variance between bad and great.

If you're doing a tri definitely do some test runs, running fresh and running after swimming and cycling is a really different game. Even just the cycle to run combo takes some getting used to.

    Forgot how far 5km was

Second run yesterday (first where fitbit didn't fuck up) and managed to get to 5km, breakdown was:
    1. 5:36
    2. 5:14
    3. 5:08
    4. 5:18
    5. 5:27

I figure that's not too bad considering how little I run, did enjoy though.

That’s pretty damn good, my quickest ever kilometres on a 5km were about 4:50.
