At the end of the day, if you do click, put in details and not sure, you're still better off telling them so at least if it is dodgy they can go about doing their best to fix it vs not knowing about it and getting smashed later.
I always think of the old "have you ever met someone with an IQ of 100, how incredibly stupid are they and that's the average/median, half the population is stupider than that" thought pattern. They're just too stupid to actually critically think and when you throw in computer illiteracy, which is still startlingly high even in younger generations, and you've got a perfect storm.

To be fair, computer scams are just the latest way of taking advantage of stupid people and it will continue forever I dare say.

Speaking of this stuff, more spam related tho, got an sms from "life facts" (some random mobile number) today saying "thanks for subscribing, to opt out type STOP" etc. then proceeded to gimme some lame ass attempt at quirky fact humour.

Sent them back a pic of

Got a response almost straight away saying "upgrade confirmed! Thanks for becoming a premium member. You will now receive 2 life facts a day"

Not sure if troll, srs, or scam - says each msg costs 55c but i got no fkn idea how that works if they're just sending me sms from another mobile number for something i obv didn't sign up for or give any payment info to.

Left em with a pic of a concerned looking Jake the Muss so will see what happens tomorrow.

Yeah check this TED talk where James Veitch does exactly that, pretty funny -

Pretty much it can be done, just not really recommended doing it from your main email as it'll likely mean you receive more targeting.

And to that point, is there really an easier way to reach such a mass amount of people with as little effort as something like this? Even at .01%, you'd be getting huge returns.

Then there are smarter ones that you can almost not blame people for being fooled from time to time. Both Mike Sheahan and Robbo have been done by similar scams -

Rule joined Triple M's Hot Breakfast on Tuesday morning where he was asked about the scams Sheahan and Robinson had fallen victim to recently.

Robinson had previously elaborated about how he filled in his details on his phone only to be locked out of his phone and his bank.

“How much do we think that he's been embezzled?" Eddie McGuire asked.

“Half the price of a very good car?” Rule replied. “Maybe $40,000?”

The email scam dealt Sheahan a bigger blow.

"They intercepted his actual email exchange," he explained.

“In Mike's defence, I think this could happen to anybody, because he thought it was his daughter emailing him. And it wasn't, it was a scam artist.

“(Mike went for) $40,000 plus a six-figure sum.”

It might not be all bad news, with Rule believing they might have earned some back already.

“I believe that they’re both working very hard to get it back. Mike already might have assured himself of getting back six figures, I hope. No one wants to cop that sort of money."

Eddie assured you have to be wary of what you do with your details.

"The point is, be careful out there," he said.

The whole identity theft stuff is another level of crazy. I hope I never get done for that as people spend years trying to fix that up after they're done.

My IT security story is from my friend who works in IT support. He works at a place that has all Apple computers and used a program called Apple Remote Desktop, this lets you view a screen as long as you know the admin password and the person will not know. Anyway one day he is trying to help someone, accidentally clicks on the CFO computer (who is top of the chain for them) who just happens to be watching a video of himself rogering his wife. He takes a few screenshots for safety.

In any case a few years later, it's redundancy time. They get told that the IT dept has to half. Guy has mortgages and has a great wage their so doesn't want to leave. He ponders what to do with the info he has. Very wisely he thinks to himself and sends out a email immediately about keeping personal and private videos on your work computer and then reminds everyone that you cannot watch porn on your computers either. Needless to say he kept his job. Think he left 2 years ago now though but got a extra 6 years out of it with that info

Sheahan is old and almost certainly computer illiterate. To be fair having seen some of his top 50s I'm not sure he's very bright either, he seems to have got by being the "nice guy" in footy journalism rather than any real strong intelligence levels.

Robbo is a fucking moron, he's the textbook example of the type of idiot that scammers are hoping to hit. If you asked me to name an AFL journo you expected got hit up by a scam I'd name him 3 times before even trying to think of the next option.

Robbo wouldn't be able to find his credit card, lost it at the bar. Has no cash either but did win the meat raffle (that's why he has no cash)

I often get that same blackmail scam.

Worried me for a little while, but after a while realized Rumblah wasn't really doing it for the money.

In other news, how good is a meat raffle
We demand an investigation into the replacement of referee Rafshan Irmatov and his departure at a difficult time in such an important match. We ask for an examination of the grassland that was not suitable for the Syrian team, while Australian players seem to be wearing shoes that cling to the long grass, so we saw Syrian players fall during the game, while Australia's players are steady.

I wonder if private schoolís business model is sustainable in the medium to long term.

Of my friends that are having kids I donít know one that would be able to pay for private school in 5 to 12 years time (assuming no parental support). I genuinely have no idea where their enrolments will be coming from in 15 years time.

I find it so stupid that how much they charge and then on top of that, how they're getting the majority of the funding from the government compared to public schools.

They receive far less money per student than public schools

Most people who are financially smart are willing to invest in their children, literally. Amount of clients I've seen that are putting away $50 a week from the day the kid is born is crazy, basically the only ones who don't do it these days are the ones who make so much a year they don't need to consider that.

Simple fact is that the way the cost of the houses in areas with decent public schools has gone it's actually significantly cheaper to send your kids to a private school if you have any interest in them being successful, unless you've got half a dozen kids or something ridiculous.

Say you had 3 kids, at 25k a year, that's still only 375k total for HS, which is basically the markup to live in the right zone compared to living across the road in the wrong zone. Probably doesn't help that there are only a half dozen public schools worth sending the kids to. Pretty much every suburb in WA that is linked to a good public HS is a $1m+ suburb for that reason primarily.

Also I'm with Embers on this one, I don't know a single friend with kids who has any intention in leaving their kids to the public school system, most of them will go the step further and do the K-12 at top private schools. Having said that I went to one of the top private schools and thus the majority of my friends are well raised, well educated and know firsthand the direct benefits that going to those schools endows on your children.

As long as parents have a direct interest in their children doing well in life I'm pretty sure the private school system is going to continue to flourish and will keep bumping the admission cost until they actually start to see a diminished amount of enrollments. Especially given the trajectory of education in general with the public system just getting worse. Most parents will pay the extra to greatly diminish the amount of dropkicks that their kids are exposed to and everything else is just a bonus.

Given public schools are government schools, you'd want to hope so.

Previous comment on how much they charge makes sense given it's private and that's how they fund it.

I think a very high percentage of people would get tricked with what happened to Mike. There was some loan between Mike and his daughter, his PA was in discussions with her in regards to getting it paid however Mike's daughter's email account had been compromised with the scammer just watching the emails going back and forth. At the right time the scammer jumped in, pretending to be the daughter and asked the money to be transferred and gave new bank details. The PA then transferred these funds across.

So coming from someone you suspect with money you're looking to transfer to them and they send through bank details. If you're switched on enough you might notice new bank details or look to call first but that's going to trick a lot of people.

Robbo was him being an idiot but I think you'd seriously be surprised at how many people would get tricked by the exact same thing.

Honestly have to disagree with you there.

Im still gobsmacked the financial burden that so many people go through just to get what they perceive as a better education.

Really all these schools care about is getting the score in the end and I see most students really struggle at university as they aren't directly given the answer (considering what is happening at uni now, that may have changed).

Its also not just the 25k, there are so many more costs and extra activities.

Considering some of my good mates all went to private schools their parents had 3 kids who they paid 25k+ to go to all 3 became tradies honestly what a waste of money (parents are now divorced because of financial issues, go figure).

I do agree a property in a good school area is great but it could also be a great rental yeild.

I honestly feel deep down a lot of parents are happy to pay as then they feel educating the child isnt their problem and because they have paid so much they can demand so much more from the school and the teachers, which restricts the school so much.

    Just my 2 cents.
