This Amex deal is one of the best I've seen in a while. It's normally very difficult to get a large lump sum of Velocity points, unlike Qantas where ANZ always has deals with a $0 annual fee for the first year.

I'd hold this card and rotate through other Visa deals with lump sum points offers, like ANZ.

Earning Velocity points is also difficult as most earn rates are 1 pt per $2 spent or 2pt per $3 spent as the norm.

If you get Amex points (like my Amex Platinum Edge card) you can transfer them at 1:1 and normally a couple times a year velocity run a bonus 15% promotion. This seems to earn Velocity instead of Amex points at 1.5 per $1.

The other ANZ Travel Adventure one isn't as easy to book your complimentary flight, you need 60 day advanced notice and must be in your name (the annual fee is about $150 less but you don't get the added perks of Amex monthly cash back offers, shop small etc.).

With Amex you could call and book a flight any time on behalf of anyone within a couple of days to 12 months.

The travel credit is fucking shit. I used it to book a hotel and legit like 70 to 80 bucks more expensive than going on Trivago/Hotels combined etc.

That reminds me the annual fee is almost due, gonna call them and say I'm cancelling and see what they'll give me for my "loyalty". Lump sum of points and no annual fee pls.

Yeah don't mind it. Given its a reduced fee of $49, however the 100,000 Citi points as I understand will only equate to 40,000 or 50,000 Velocity points (still very good compared to Virgin Money and NAB velocity offers).

It seems that the value of the points and conversion rate you can obtain is dependent on the tier of card your hold. Eg. This card is a lower tier than tbe Signature and Prestige range.

Also the actual earn rate for the card, 1 Citi reward per dollar is quite low if you're converting to a travel partner. I noted there's some types of spend eligible for a higher reward rate.

I read somewhere in the comments it's a 2.5:1 conversion rate to Velocity. Can't seem to find out if it's also 2.5:1 for Singapore Airlines Krisflyer. That'd be pretty sweet if so as the conversion from Virgin is 1.25 Velocity to 1 Krisflyer.

Singapore Airlines have a great redemption system for their frequent flyers., both the number of points needed and fees charged seem much lower than others. You can also add a stopover in Singapore for a night free of charge or spend 2 days in Singapore for like $20 extra. Look into the Singapore stopover Holiday for more info on that (Note: it's not exclusive to Singapore. Eg. Can travel return to the US and stopover in Europe).

That ANZ Reward Travel Adventure card has still got its 40k Velocity points promotion. It also has a much easier spend criteria to get the bonus points (although personally your everyday expenses should easily be 1k a month anyway).

Only downside of the ANZ one is the annual fee of $225 per year, however you get a free return flight domestically with Virgin. Obviously this is more valuable for us toast folks. In your case a return Sydney to Brisbane/Melbourne trip return would only be about half that fee on a good day. You do also get 2 lounge passes however.

That one is OK. It also has a limited earnings rate, depends on whether you might end up with a month where you spend over 2.5k. As the point earnings half for the rest of the month after that.

Depending on your annual income ANZ have cards offering Qantas points with no annual fee in the first year. ANZ rewards platinum offer 65k points with min 50k annual income requirements. Black card 75k points with 75k income requirement.

Think the St George one here is pretty good also, has some interesting perks.

I follow these guys on Facebook and this is their recent summary on cards.

Yeah I stumbled across Frequent Flyer Points: Find The Best Deals & Programs - Point Hacks

And their most mentioned is that ANZ Travel Adventure card.

I might grab that one to start. Seems highly recommended by you + others.

I had stumbled across the card without seeing them talk about it. But to be honest, I actually very rarely use the card, I just keep it on the basis its a return flight with lounge passes to Melbourne or Sydney for $225 a year I'm already at least $100 in front from that alone.

Only shit thing is needing to book the flights a minimum 3 months in advance.

Your purchases are in ANZ rewards points as opposed to Velocity, but you can convert them and just wait for Velocity to do a bonus on points transfers (like they're currently doing this month). I try and use my Amex wherever possible as it gives the best reward rate or another card that earns 1 Qantas pt per dollar.

But the Travel Adventure is very good for the lump sum of Velocity points upon joining (think you'll need to register for Velocity prior to applying because they match your details to their database to credit the points).

I will be using the card when I travel overseas. So basically it's replaced my 28 Degrees card that I used to keep as my overseas travel credit card (because you can earn reward points with ANZ, 28 degrees gave you nothing and no longer allows fee free ATM withdrawal overseas).

And I use Citibank Plus, a savings account/debit card for any cash withdrawals needed when overseas as no FX or foreign ATM fees (provided you use a Citibank ATM or ones affiliated with Citibank).

Was going to say. Is the base level Amex still the best for purchase accumulation of points?

    Generally, yes.

A lot of the online shopping places offer a heap in points per dollar too.

Most of the bank issued cards you'll get between 0.5 to 1 Velocity or QF point per dollar. In some cases once you go over a certain amount the reward rate reduces further.

Amex points generally are minimum 1 to 1, in some cases I can get as high as 4pt per $1.

    Get on board Clints.

ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure card, this time with 80k Velocity points!

Read one of my earlier posts for the features of the card because I cbf going through it all again, but in summary this is a great value Visa to hold and especially for us living on the best coast, with that free flight each year.

The $375 annual fee is hefty, only Perth people really get max value from the complimentary flight. They also do monthly statement credit offers, Eg.
    - Spend $250 at Harvey Norman get $50 back.
    - Spend $40 at BP, get $10 back up to 2 times, and
    - Shop Small month which starts in November. Spend $20, get $10 back up to 5 times at participating small businesses.

90k Velocity points is a big offer because they normally aren't as generous with the lump sum sign on bonus. The earn rate of 1.5 per $1 is also very good.

Note Velocity are devaluing their points in the coming months and adding an additional carrier fee/surcharge for reward flight redemptions, it's still more affordable than Qantas and their partner airlines though.

I also just realised I posted about this card back in January trigg

They were offering 100k points through the partner sites at the time. 90k now is still very good.

It's probably the best Amex card around at the moment, considering the fee, perks, earn rate etc.

Issue for me is I can't get a lump sum bonus sign on points on a new Amex until I haven't held any for 18 months.

Also the second card is ANZ rewards points not Velocity or Qantas.

But for all of November ANZ rewards are giving a 30% boost on transfers to Velocity but the transfer rate is still 0.5 velocity for 1 ANZ. So a 30% bonus only bumps it up to 0.65 per 1 pt.

    Other things to note.
    1. Velocity are devaluing their points at the end of the year (ie. Less efficient to transfer to other airlines)
    2. Amex are significantly devaluing their, Amex points by half in April 2019 (even after that it's better value to spend with Amex)
    3. Apparently both Virgin and Singapore Airlines will reinstate the carrier surcharges on reward bookings. So the fees charged in addition to the points will be higher.
