    Computer Problems Thread

Think my laptop has carked it. It powers up but the screen doesn't power up at all, then after like a minute it just powers off. For the last day its been doing it but like every third time you turned it on it would work. But no have turned it on and off like a thousand times and nothing. Ready to fly kick it across the room. Only had it for like a year. Any suggestions?

Inb4 have you tried turning it off and on, or getting nbn.

Happened to me once, and this is how I fixed it:

Remove battery (from the laptop), unplug power, hold power button for 60 seconds, turn on computer with power plug only, then shutdown, add battery and restart.

If that fails, upgrade to a $6,000 laptop and acquire NBN, should fix all your problems.

Plug your computer monitor into your laptop when you turn it on, see if you get a display on your computer monitor rather then your laptop. If you do, then you know there's an issue with the laptop screen, if you don't, something to do with your laptop. Could be overheating (dusty underneath?) or just need a format although you'd like to think it gets past post and into your windows before it restarts, hard to see without having any display.

You guys are all skipping a stage as well.

Stage 1 - Turn it off and on again
    Stage 2 - Reformat it
    Stage 3 - Buy a new one/nbn/etc

One time my laptop stopped working, so I just unscrewed a bunch of shit with no idea what I was doing then hit it a few times, screwed it all back together and it worked fine.

    Hope this is helpful.

LOL I literally did this before. Couldn't get a couple of the screws undone so just pulled it open to see what was under there. Have punched it a few times but no dice. Just think I'll buy a new one. Cant be fucked with this shit. I fuckin hate technology.

    How old is it?

But my dad has like an air compressor, took the battery out (I think the case too, I can't remember) and just raped the shit out of it with the air compressor (not too close though)

Still speechless at the amount of dust that came out.. just non stop dust for a minute.

    Then all good!!

Probably a last resort though :P

Oh yeah saw you said it was a year, should pay more attention.

Seems surprising for only a year but could be stuffed with dust or something. Probably some software stuff too but not much you can do to fix that if you can't get it on. Good luck!

Does anyone have an ASUS laptop? If so, are you happy with it?

Never had a problem with ASUS myself.

I currently have a cheap Samsung. Three years and still running well.

Have had 2 ASUS laptops previously and was happy with both.

ASUS are (or at least were when I last looked) one of the most reliable laptop brands out there

Also, would your current laptop still be under warranty?

Been meaning to buy a new laptop for a while, thinking I might get my next one from these guys - Logical Blue One - Buy Cheap Laptops Online, Buy Notebooks Online, Laptops

They seem to have their own brand but spec/price wise, it seems to be better compared to the majority of places I've seen so far.

Nah not under warranty. Those ones look good, but again, probably a bit more than i want to spend and more power than i need. Just want something pretty basic, but with enough power that it wont get bogged down doing more than 1 thing at a time.

My current laptop is 1366x768 but most things these days are 1920x1080 I assume. Worth checking what your current laptop is, if it's 1366x768 then you won't notice any change between the two with that. If it's 1920x1080 then you might notice a downgrade like that.

x2 USB Ports - Might not affect you at all although I think most laptops have 3, pretty minor but something to keep in mind.

If you've only had it for just over a year you should be able to get them to repair it under warranty, even if the warranty has expired. Australian Consumer Law provides implied warranties that says products should be fit for purpose for a reasonable amount of time (depending on how much the item was/is worth.) 1 year and a bit isn't a reasonable amount of time.

I'd ring the manufacturer (assuming you want to get it repaired), give them the 'I know my rights under Australian Consumer Law' bit and they'll most likely bend over backwards.

Edit: have successfully used this for getting my $3k Samsung TV repaired for free after being out of warranty for just under a year.

This, just got my Samsung TV repaired too under statutory warranty.
We demand an investigation into the replacement of referee Rafshan Irmatov and his departure at a difficult time in such an important match. We ask for an examination of the grassland that was not suitable for the Syrian team, while Australian players seem to be wearing shoes that cling to the long grass, so we saw Syrian players fall during the game, while Australia's players are steady.

Thanks for the replies. Reps all round. Just went out and bought an ASUS one very similar to the one i posted in the link. Think it will do the job for me. Screen is 1366x768 but i'm not going to be watching a lot of HD stuff on it so not a huge concern.

On the warranty stuff, i can't really be fucked messing about with all that at the moment, and it wasn't a super expensive laptop or anything so i can deal with losing it. But that's really good to know, will keep that in mind for future expensive purchases.
