with the sanctions and now opec agreeing to keep demand as is with most countries still in recession or stagnating seems a pretty deliberate play, just doesn't seem to have a whole lot of positives.

Don't think the Saudi's can outlast the US shale boom so I personally think it's in vain, Russia (and OPEC members bar Saudis)are the main losers here.
Seem to be poking the bear in Russia,when they wouldn't have really had to lose much market at all while maintaining prices and playing a wait and see approach with the US at this point in time when most economies/mid east isn't in great shape as it is.

It's not really a major currency, but Russia is still quite a big economy.RUSSIA’S central bank has announced a dramatic hike of its key interest rate from 10.5 to 17 per cent after the rouble plunged to a fresh record low.
“This decision is aimed at limiting substantially increased rouble depreciation risks and inflation risks,” the Bank of Russia said in a statement posted on its website.
The rouble yesterday suffered a mini-crash, falling by 9.5 per cent in a single day despite repeated interventions by the central bank.
