First Test v New Zealand - GABBA, 5 - 9 November.

Second Test v New Zealand - WACA 13 - 17, November.

Third Test v New Zealand, Adelaide Oval, 27 Nov - 1st Dec. Day/ Night Test.

-------------------------------------------------------

First Test v West Indies, Blundstone Arena, 10 - 14 December.

Second Test v West Indies, MCG, 26 - 30 December.

Third Test v West Indies, SCG, 3 - 7 January.

Just twelve days out from the first home Test match of the Summer, figured it'd be time to get this up and running. Once again players form will be judged on Matador Cup, which is just brilliant.. So first we'll take a look at the top performers of the competition as it stands. Unfortunately all of the statistics are heavily skewed by playing games against CA XI which is basically an entire team of kids deemed not good enough to play for their chosen states.

Onto my thoughts on what our GABBA side will be:

1 - Shaun Marsh (should be: Cameron Bancroft) - Basically after Shaun made 180-odd against CA XI (those bunch of kids mentioned above) he's been locked in. CA gonna CA at the end of the day and their chub for Shaun will continue into our summer.
2 - David Warner - Pending fitness, but I'm pretty certain he's been deemed okay.
3 - Usman Khawaja (could be: Joe Burns) - Could well be decided by who does more in this two day match on at the moment. Joe Burns is opening though, and I think that's where CA sees him long-term. If Usman gets the nod, for christs sake CA, give him the six Tests.
4 - Steve Smith - no reasoning needed.
5 - Adam Voges - Made 76 in his last Test innings, just coming into some white ball form. Provides Smith with an experienced head to chat about ideas. Would have to be his final hurrah but he's handy to have right now.
6 - Mitch Marsh - Pick and stick CA you mutts. A lot better bowler than people give him credit for, pls stay fit m8. Moises Henriques has done okay in recent times.
7 - Peter Nevill - He's had a disgustingly bad Matador Cup but I can't see CA dumping him. Quality keeper and provides some much needed defensive ability with the bat. Best hybrid keeper/ batsman we have.
8 - Mitchell Johnson - Ye no explaination needed.
9 - Mitchell Starc - CA love and he's ripped the Matador Cup apart.
10 - Josh Hazlewood (could be: James Pattinson) - HazleGOAT has played just the two Matador Cup games, and CA could use that and say he hasn't bowled enough (which would be fucking ironic) and go with Patto. Happy enough with either, would prefer Haze for attack balance.
11 - Nathan Lyon - just about locked I'd imagine.

So ye, who do you think will be selected and can we beat the Kiwis?

Scorecard for two day match against NZ - Live & Official Cricket Scores | cricket.com.au (http://live.cricket.com.au/#/1559/39085)

As BobbyMorri (http://www.rollingzone.com.au/forum/members/bobbymorri/) pointed out in the other thread, Adam Voges has given his thoughts on the pink ball - Pink ball 'didn't hold up well at all' - Voges | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo (http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-new-zealand-2015-16/content/story/932165.html)

Australia batsman Adam Voges has expressed severe doubt about the ability of the experimental pink ball to hold up to 80 overs of battering in the upcoming day-night Adelaide Test, saying the ball had lost its colouring and was "more green than pink" by the end of the 50-over Prime Minister's XI fixture against New Zealand.

"There wasn't much pink left on it by the end of the game," Voges said. "The one that got hit onto the roof [by Martin Guptill] and didn't come back was 28 overs old and it looked like it was 68 overs old to be fair. To be honest, it didn't hold up very well at all tonight.

"It looked as though the lacquer had come off and it was turning green basically. There were bits of pink left, but it was more green than pink by the end. I know that it stopped swinging, there was no reverse-swing or anything like that because both sides get chunked up equally, but yeah the older it gets, I can't see it being any easier to see."

*will add ODI content in after the Test matches.

Bancroft (showed enough so far this summer to showcase he is not a one year pony)
Warner (nuff said, not VC though if i had a say)
Burns (i am not convinced, but prefer him over the others. prefer Cowan to get another chance, but i am biased to a former Tasmanian)
Smith (GSP, or greatest since Punter)
Voges(Experience needed, shown enough, probably last summer)
Henriques (not as good bowler as M.Marsh, but not a Marsh means he gets added points as is a better, more reliable bat. would love Fauks, but needs more red ball cricket)
Nevill(needs time in the middle, not just slog mode. If Wade could keep and Whiteman was ready, i would have them ahead)
Mitch/Starc (only one at a time. Starc first game, and then rotate. cant have 2 crazy left armers)
Hazelwood (line length)
Patto (not a crazy left armer but might be as wasteful. destroyed NZ last time they were here)
Lyon (best FC spinner in the country)

would like to have Siddle in there, but no bowling yet this summer makes it hard. have him on stand by for Patto, who shouldnt be rushed.

Rumblah

Marsh fails while Burns has gone big and Khawaja is cruising on 60. I want to believe.

Bunga
24th October 2015, 05:33 PM
Surely after the ashes series we will play only 1 left armer even though Starc's white ball form again excellent. Can't have 2 of the 4 main bowlers leak runs so easily despite being wicket takers - MJ is the proven test match performer in Australian conditions.

MJ, Haze, Siddle, Lyon for mine as the bowlers.

I'd wait till Pattinson has played some shield cricket.

Agree only one of Starc or Johnson should play, with Hazlewood and Siddle I guess. Although Siddle looked terrible last time he played test cricket in Australia.

Lyon locked in as spinner, Nevill as keeper.

Henriques doesn't have a hope IMO, they'll go with M Marsh.

Would prefer Smith at three, Voges at four and whoever else is there at 5. So fucking sick of throwing the newest batsmen to the wolves, ridiculous policy. My preference would be Warner and Bancroft (I guess) and Burns at 5. Suspect it'll be Warner and Bancrosft with Ussie at three, Smith 4, Voges five.

Also think NZ are a huge chance of knocking us off. Settled batting lineup - Vulnerable up the top of the order where Latham is steady but Rutherford is shit But Williamson Taylor McCullem Neesham Watling is a really good 3-7. Watling's a good fighter. Then I assume the bowlers will be Craig, Bracewell, Southee (who can all hold the bat) and Boult. Boult is a gun, Southee is a solid bowler these days as well. Good depth with Bracewell being pushed by Henry. Craig should be got to on our pitches, and Neeshams bowling is nothing special (solid bat though). Good team though against our inexperienced lineup. Although obviously our bowlers at home will be good.

Western Royboy who posts on Big Footy, normally on the money with his mail, has heard that Burns will open & Khawaja bat at 3 in the test team announced on Friday.

That would mean a top order of :-

Warner
Burns
Khawaja
Smith
Voges
M Marsh
Nevill

You can lock in Johnson & Lyon, Starc also I guess after his Matador cup performances. Haze & Siddle I would guess will fight it out for the final spot.

Rumblah
28th October 2015, 07:28 PM

Went on the Aus A tour to India around July and August, made a hundred and two 70's. Only played 3 Matador Cup games which was weird given the :bun:gladesh tour was cancelled. Made 111* against the Kiwi's last week too along with Burns.

it is a bit of a farce atm. NZ have doubled declared, and hence the match is over. 1/500 was a farce already, but now this. its weird. the reason atm is that it is due to the pitch falling apart, especially where the bowlers feet land.

Katich, Rogers join commentary ranks | cricket.com.au (http://www.cricket.com.au/news/abc-grandstand-radio-commentary-team-chris-rogers-simon-katich-jim-maxwell/2015-11-02)

Former Test openers headline new look ABC Grandstand commentary team for 2015-16 season

Former Test batsmen Chris Rogers and Simon Katich have joined ABC Radio's cricket coverage for the upcoming summer. Rogers, who retired following the Ashes, made a guest commentary appearance during Channel Nine's coverage of the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup last month and will be one of several expert analysts for Grandstand this summer.

Joining Rogers will be Katich, who played 56 Tests between 2001 and 2010, and former Australian and Netherlands international Dirk Nannes. Jim Maxwell will again lead the ball-by-ball commentary team, his 39th summer behind the microphone, while respected AFL and horse racing commentator Gerard Whateley has also joined the team.

The Australian is reporting that Kiwi Brian Waddle and West Indian Fazeer Mohammed will contribute as ball-by-ball callers. "I’m really pleased with how the commentary team has come together this year and we’re all looking forward to sharing what will be an exciting summer as the new Australian team comes together under Steve Smith," Maxwell said. "The team we have in the box this year has a strong understanding of the game and will draw on their own experiences in top flight cricket to bring their unique insights to listeners. And I’m sure we’ll have a bit of fun as we get to know each other."

Mute the tv & put on ABC radio this summer :dasit::approve:

Starc has been pretty poor. Johnson just no movement, but other than about one ball not particularly wayward. Hazlewoods first over was pretty good, just occasionally gets a tad too wide of off stump and they can just leave it.

Burns dad was a bit odd, what he said was ok but clearly inexperienced on the mic so took forever to get there and was trying too hard not to fuck up.

All the right guys have scored runs from a selection point of view. Only one test so you can't take a heap, test could've been different if Southee got him early day one. But he battled through that well and is now cashing in. Likewise Khawaja, test will come more when he's in at 1/2, not 1/near 200, and we see whether his vulnerability to getting bogged down comes back, but he did everything asked of him this test and it's very promising.

MJ showed he can still dial it up which is nice. Starc capable of good spells. Hazlewood was good yesterday but crap today unfortunately, but there's bits and pieces to take from that. Shows the difference between bowling behind 550 and some of the shit the batsmen dished up in England.

Peter Walsh is just a complete gibberer, reminds me of the twelft man version of Darrel Eastlake. Plus as host in the studio he's pathetic, never mentions the rugby league scores when they're on even when going in depth to womens basketball or something.

Contrast to say Perth or NSW, where regardless of main sport covered you always get a good round up of what else is happening in sport, comes off as poor from the national broadcaster.

But as I said, Whately is in his element commentating, so he's good there on the radio this summer, and the contrast in the radio compared to the over the top hyperbole of nine is pretty noticeable.

god i am in a terrible mood.

its great to see that we can score big on a friendly wicket. shame about the fact that whenever we go to England in the next 40 years, we will lose when we play on a pitch which actually does something, other than being fast and hard, which ruins what swing the ball has inside the first 10 overs.

its a shame new zealand have come out so flat this tour. if they have better luck with injures, they will probably beat us too over in NZ.

i hope the rest of the series is more even between the teams and bat and ball. it has been a while since we have lost a test match at home, yet this team is incompetent away from home, funny that, when we give opposition teams unplayable pitches as a warm up . yes, im rustled still about losing the god damm ashes to a shit team like england because we love to go bang bang and bowl really fast and score even faster. and im rustled that this match so one sided. it has been so long since we had a good even test match in australia.

and can cricket australia do something about their live score website. it is a pile of dog turd.

Allrounder's back injury weakens already decimated NZ bowling stocks

New Zealand's decimated bowling stocks have been dealt another blow, with allrounder Jimmy Neesham set to miss the remainder of the Test series against Australia with a back injury. The 25-year-old Neesham joins spearhead Tim Southee on the sidelines, with Southee unable to bowl in Australia's second innings of the Gabba Test with his own back problems.

Australia v NZ 2nd Test, WACA wicket (http://www.news.com.au/sport/cricket/australia-v-new-zealand-2nd-test-traditional-pace-and-bounce-expected-from-waca-wicket/story-fneba8pu-1227604742765)

AS the construction of the new Perth Stadium rolls on, much of the WA sporting community is looking eagerly toward the future.

But when it comes to the famous WACA Ground pitch, it’s all about focusing on the past.

WACA curator Matt Page is confident his strip will do justice to the pace and bounce expected out west for Friday’s opening to the Second Test between Australia and New Zealand.

“It’s all about us trying to replicate the olden days and provide a traditional WACA wicket,” Page said.

“It goes back to the 70s. So for us, every wicket we do, we’re trying to replicate those conditions.

“Hopefully it will be like a traditional WACA wicket. There will be some pace and bounce for the quick guys, absolutely.”

Though the green tinges evident in the pitch on Wednesday morning are expected to fade come Friday’s opening delivery, the likes of Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are expected to relish the pace-friendly conditions.

Perth’s searing heat could also play a role in how the deck holds up. Temperatures are set to soar as high as 35C for the first four days of the Test, including a top of 37C for Saturday.

“There’s no cracks as yet,” Page said.

“It’ll crack with the weather but I don’t think the cracks will play a factor.

“Leading in, we can control (the preparation) quite well. We can control the moisture.

“Once it starts on Friday, it’s sort of taken out of our hands. Hopefully we can get the prep right and we’ll see a good game come Friday.”

Australia stick with the XI that comprehensively won in Brisbane with Peter Siddle again 12th man

Captain Steve Smith has confirmed Australia will field an unchanged XI for the second Test against New Zealand in Perth. The hosts cruised to a 208-run win at the Gabba, where Peter Siddle was 12th man. Siddle has rejoined the squad but as expected the Victorian will again be on drinks duty when the second Commonwealth Bank Test starts on Friday.

Smith and coach Darren Lehmann were both critical of the side's new-ball bowling in Brisbane, but selectors were never going to make a change unless it was forced due to injury. "The conditions are going to be pretty similar to the Gabba," Smith said.

"It looks a very good wicket out there, so we've gone in with the same team. "He (Siddle) was talked about. He's bowling really well at the moment, but we've won the last Test with this line-up." Smith was unsure who would take the new ball. "The breeze will play a part," he said.

A lot of talk about crowds at Brisbane and WA for test cricket and how it's holding them back, particularly from Melbourne types (media/CA, not on here). It's a real snobbery thing IMO. Especially when Melbourne every year is guarenteed to start on a public holiday, and often gets extra (this year for example, first three days will be on weekend/public holiday). Even Sydney, generally well supported, doesn't get that luxury (last year first four days were all working days for example), although still school holidays at least.

Compared to at the WACA where you will bake in 35+ degrees. Or Brisbane where they start the summer with two days in the working week and a whole lot of cricketers playing sport on the Saturday. When you combine that with a dodgy forecast and a game only going one way after two days of course crowds aren't what they could be (even though 55K was a record for Aus/NZ at the Gabba).

It's not a fair debate over crowds and the future of test cricket in the country when none of the background factors are brought up IMO.

Australia v New Zealand: For the crowds to come back, a day at the cricket must be cheaper - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2015-11-12/for-the-crowds-to-come-back-the-cricket-must-be-cheaper/6935088)

Yeah prices are shitty, especially with the costs of food and drink thrown in (what's better than spending 60 bucks on a ticket for the privilidge of paying $7.50 for a tepid schooner of Carlton mid).

I've never understood why they don't just start Tests on Saturday. Get yourself 2 days of good crowds while the result is in the balance. A lot of the time games are headed down a particular path or over by day 3-4. You're just wasting your prime crowd days.

Going at over 5 an over. Never thought I'd see a flat WACA pitch. Quite disappointed.

yeah, im just waiting for Hobart to be criticized on its crowd. I dont blame anyone for not waiting to pay to watch the West Indies. even for $30 GA ticket is still expensive for that game. i guess it is a good thing that the match is the first match of the series. what are the West Indian warm up games?

i think most test cricket prices should fall on general. the longer forms are more of a TV sport nowadays. you have to entice people to the ground.

TBF, bad bowling on a fast pitch will always leak runs. i will get on the bandwagon if i dont see cracks by the end of the weekend and after the mitch's bowl.

gee NZ have been disappointing.

I don't have too much of a problem with cricket prices when you compare it to the footy. You get about 3x as much play for about the same price. The issue us you spend so much because you're there for longer and if you go every day it adds up. I think they should sell 5 day tickets for a decent saving. Anyway I'm a saca member so it doesn't really affect me.

Must be frustrating for the kiwi's, basically the same as Williamsons in Gabba test which was given and only just umpires call on review, this one seemed alot of ball was hitting and not out. Warner as well. No reviews for next 50 overs.

Pretty solid day from Aus so far.
