Why is it even still a questions if Khawaja should open or not? :jagsfan:

Hate the clint, but reckon we should have gone Wade as the keeper. Carey is a plodder, and reckon not batting as deep may cost us. The difference in keeping ability not as big of a deal in ODIs

Why the fuck are we contemplating playing two spinners. Lyon gonna get tonked out of the park on these smaller grounds if he gets games.

Stoinis arguably as weak a link as Carey is. Averaging 30 with bat and 54 with ball in 2019. Big rig though so gotta love that.

Where to begin on that one?

Carey's glovework is at best, average. He's a lucky boy to have peeled off some quick runs because jesus christ those two dropped catches were vital. That Pandya one especially because he tee'd off straight away. It's a shame in a lot of ways we are so bereft of good keepers because not only is he a lock in all our short form sides but he's regarded as a leader too.

Our death bowling is disgusting. It has been for 4 or 5 seasons now and it seems like nothing is being done about it. Starc and Stoinis lol. If I'm a domestic bowler anywhere in the country that's the one thing I'm trying to improve drastically - wont find yourself in the national setup sooner. Kane Richo isn't awful at it but he's not going to play, feels like everyone else just doesn't care about it. Something like 111 off the last ten last night.

That fucking Warner innings. Read a tweet last night saying this innings and the one against the Afghans in game one are the slowest of his International ODI career. If I thought he was smart enough I'd be suggesting he's trolling us all from the inside but I'm just unsure he could pull it off. Running out fat boy and then continuing to just plod along turned the match. Strike rate of 67 yet they reckon Khawaja doesn't go hard enough to open lol.

The balance of the squad. Why do we have one genuine middle order bat? Why is there absolutely no pressure on Stoinis, Maxwell or Carey (who admittedly did make runs) because there are no replacement options in this squad? Why can't Turner and Handscomb be unofficial touring parties in the team before an injury occurs? Not like CA isn't raking it in anyway, surely they can fork out for a couple of extra hotel rooms for a month.

yeah_nah
10th June 2019, 02:56 PM
Warners innings was the most agitated I've ever been watching a game of cricket.

I should've turned off when he ran out finch, knew it was very unlikely at that point given how shit Warner was going.

I didnt get khawaja at four either. That is when I stopped watching and went to bed, if it was maxxy then within a few overs we'd know if we were a chance to get the run rate to something achievable (a role that khawaja could have performed) but bringing him out at 4 seems like delaying the inevitable

Bunga
11th June 2019, 08:23 PM
The bowling attack clearly isn't strong enough, Zampa & Stoinis I think are the ones that need a rest.

Zampa's bowling average is now 46.10 in ODIs over the last two years, from 24 matches - that is very average.

Stoinis is averaging 14.33 with the bat and 37.75 with the ball over his last 10 ODIs - both are not good enough.

I wonder if bringing in Behrendorff to open the bowling with Starc so we can save Cummins for later might be a solution.

Maybe try Lyon over Zampa, Lyon would not bowl the amount of loose balls Zampa tends to every over.

Possible 11 for the next game :-

Finch
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Marsh
Maxwell
Carey
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Behrendorff

Adding Marsh for Stoinis makes the batting stronger, Dorff & Lyon I think are worth a shot - NCN stiff but he isn't offering a lot with the ball & Dorff is a quality new ball bowler which would allow us to use Cummins more in the middle overs where teams are getting away from us. Puts pressure on Maxwell as the 5th bowler but Finch/ possibly Smith could help out if required.

Rumblah

This could be a yuuuggeee total. All depends when the wickets fall. If we can have a fairly wicketless last 10 overs then this is going to be big.

EDIT: And as I speak, a wicket. Why Maxwell?? I would have thought if you have Khawaja in this team then this is the time to bring him in. To play the anchor while Warner is playing well. For me, this is the wrong decision. Almost as bad as bringing Khawaja in to bat with Smith chasing a score of 350 and needing 10/over.

Leaving a lot to be desired imo, use of khawaja as a pinch hitter at 6 :okay:
Also at 4 v India when we need to up the run rate

Using stoin as a death bowler

There's been some decisions that simply boggle the mind.

In a world cup winning is just as important as setting yourself up for the big dance, I fear we will need khawaja at some point and he just won't have had the time in the middle he needs.

The management of yesterday's game seemed totally a reaction to the obvious problems in the India game, and while it's good to be adaptable I want to see us adapting to anticipate what's happening rather than when it's too late.

Yesterday threw up the opposite problems to the India game. The batting order in the India game was mishandled because of the slow start, this time we had a mental start and Khawaja wouldn't have been under such pressure to get belting it from ball one that he was against India, but we put him down to sixth anyway. While Maxwell came in too late against India and too soon against Pakistan. We're reactive rather than pro-active. Same for the bowling changes to some extent.

Finch is lucky though - his wicket and the late late review call yesterday for example - and if that quality in your leaders is good enough for Napoleon it's good enough for me.

While I completely agree that Maxwell should ideally never bat before the 35th over, the logic used was actually acceptable. Finch and Smith were the two that fell and Langer is very very keen on the idea of left hand right hand partnerships to throw bowlers lines off.

Again, when it comes to Maxwell the thinking must change but think of it less as a personal promotion and more he was the only right hander left. Had the shit cunt gone out instead of Smith, I've no doubt Marsh or Khawaja would have entered. Hell, even Stoinis would have batted above him if not for the injury.

One of Usman Khawaja or Shaun Marsh should make way to balance out Australia’s World Cup batting line-up, according to Newscorp journalist Robert Craddock.

Khawaja’s five innings have yielded just 98 runs at an average of 19.60, while Marsh has played just the two matches as coach Justin Langer continues to search for the right mix in the Aussie middle order.

Speaking on SEN’s Whateley, Craddock is confident Mitchell Marsh can come occupy the vacant all-rounder position following the injury to the incumbent Marcus Stoinis.

“Definitely not”, Craddock said when asked whether there’s a spot for both Marsh and Khawaja in Australia’s XI.

“If Stoinis is ruled out of this tournament, it may not necessarily be a setback for Australia.

"He (Mitchell Marsh) was bitterly disappointed to miss the tournament … he probably turned down $3 million for the IPL over the last few years because he wanted to angle towards this World Cup and the Ashes.

“This is the opportunity I don’t mind seeing Mitch Marsh get when there’s no expectations. Expectations are at bootlace level instead of people saying: ‘You’re going to be the next big thing’.”

Craddock has also called for the selection of either Adam Zampa or Nathan Lyon for the remainder of the group games, as he believes Australia will need a spinner come the business end of the tournament.

“I don’t like it, because somewhere in the semi-final or the final, you’re going to need a spin bowler,” he added.

“If it’s Adam Zampa, who’s confidence is a little bit rocked, get him back in there and let’s have a look at him. If you want to move onto Nathan Lyon, that’s fine, but get him in there.

“I just don’t see any point in not playing a spinner at the moment, because there’s two games that really matter in this tournament and I just sense you’re going to need a spinner in both of them.”

Agree with Crash on all points.

Fit-again allrounder Marcus Stoinis, leg-spinner Adam Zampa and paceman Nathan Coulter-Nile have all been named to make their returns to Australia's one-day side for their clash with Bangladesh at Trent Bridge.

Shaun Marsh, along with pacemen Jason Behrendorff and Kane Richardson are the unlucky trio to make way, as Aaron Finch won the toss - ending a seven-match losing streak - and elected to bat first on a sunny morning in Nottingham.

Stoinis, who passed a fitness test this week after suffering a side strain in Australia's defeat to India earlier in the tournament, returns to add some much-needed balance to the XI.

Nathan Lyon will play his first game of the World Cup in arguably his side's biggest match of the tournament to date as Australia make two changes for their crunch clash with England at Lord's.

Wet weather and grey clouds greeted the visitors at the home of cricket on Tuesday as England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Despite the conditions, the reigning 50-over champions have elected for Lyon over fellow tweaker Adam Zampa, while Jason Behrendorff has been selected in place of Nathan Coulter-Nile.

I have a $100 bonus bet on Sri Lanka to make the Semi's. Was listening to the Geoff Lemon podcast a few days ago and they thought they were at least a sniff (despite them being putrid) - did some analysis of the games to come and thought it was legit a chance so put the Bonus bet on at $20. Thought it might be India that dropped out though, not England.

I feel like Pakistan or the Bangas will get in instead now.

“Their balls weren’t going to hit the stumps too often, so we made a conscious effort to try to pitch up and hit the stumps as much as we could early,” Behrendorff said.

“We executed that quite well. We were able to get off to an excellent start with three wickets in the first 10 overs.

“That was a big thing we spoke about – we assessed where they bowled.”

When Morgan was told that Behrendorff said England bowled too short with the new ball, the England captain replied: “Of course he did. Of course he did.

Someone pass Morgan the :salt::salt::salt:
