Dunno.....

Khawaja opens.
Harris partners him if he keeps his form up over the next few tests. Warner if not unfortunately.
I'd play Doolan at 3
Smith at 4
Head or Labuschagne at 5
Wade at 6
Paine 7
Pattinson
Cummins
Lyon
Hazlewood/Siddle

Or potentially no Wade, and 5 bowlers.

Wouldn't even bother putting Starc in the squad. Tremain ahead of him, possibly Meredith too. Fawad as the other spinner.

Who is the best swing bowler in this country atm.Hazelwood should be fairly proficient in England imo. He bowls with great seam position. Starc will not.

I thought he was lucky to avoid being dropped last series over there.

Too predictable.

BobbyVanVeen
5th January 2019, 02:04 PM
Starc is one of those players who will never be dropped. They ignore the stats and will keep picking him because he is a lefty who creates rough patches for Lyon and he bowls really fast.......

I thought he was lucky to avoid being dropped last series over there.

Too predictable. His stats are not terrible but I recall being disappointed too. That was 4 years ago and I think only his 3rd series. He should be a far more complete bowler now.

Remain unimpressed by James Pattinson since returning. He's basically a Chihuahua. All bark and absolutely no bite.

Rumblah
5th January 2019, 02:38 PM
I thought he was lucky to avoid being dropped last series over there.

Too predictable.Entirely down to McDermott requesting he start trying to bowl a bit quicker and move away from his line and length approach which ironically, would have shredded in the UK.

LC
5th January 2019, 02:39 PM
He's got quota limits on his overs. Batsmen know it.

If he's still in one piece after the BBL, I reckon he'll tear it up with the Duke ball again.

Rumblah
5th January 2019, 02:40 PM
Best swing bowler in the country imo is Dan Worrall.

LC
5th January 2019, 02:45 PM
Injured though? If I'm going to pick a bolter, thinking that the Dukes may do a bit down Tassie way, Gabe Bell. 21 wickets at 24 so far this season, and moves it around a bit.

Histrionics
5th January 2019, 03:01 PM
Using the duke ball in the remaining shield games which will be interesting. I'll wait and see who bowls well with that.

i really hope not. Make him actually earn it for a year. Make sure he is mature enough to cope with the expectation. Make sure he is healthy enough.

At least Renshaw was making runs when they picked him. But even so, he didn't last 2 summers. T

So, what's open at this point? Centuries from Burns, Khawaja, Head and KP have to lock them in. A pretty rank Starc five-for probably locks him away.

Harris missed out again, which all but means he probably can't be in the XI. Lambo to make way for Smith? I'd switch KP and Head around in the order, feel much safer with KP's ability to grind. Head can come out and flail further back.

Renshaw to open? Has an incredible county record over there, refuse to entertain the notion of Warner.

Last 2 Ashes squads have been:
6 bats
2 all rounder
5 quick
2 spinner
2 keeper

So Paine is obviously there, between Handscomb and Wade in the back up stakes. I'd stick with Handscomb there. Lyon and.......no idea. Options are pretty garbage. At this stage you'd have to say SOK ahead of Fawad and Holland.

5 quicks - Hazlewood, Starc, Cummins, Siddle, Richardson seems pretty straight forward.

2 all rounders - Stoinis and Labuschagne (unless Mitch Marsh goes spastic in the last few rounds of the Shield?)

6 bats - Smith, Head, Burns, Khawaja, Patterson, then it comes down to Harris/Warner for the last spot.

Back up keeper, spinner, all-rounder are going to be shit choices but there out of necessity. I reckon three tons in the remaining five games gets Harris there ahead of Warner.

I reckon they'll probably name a squad as standard but then ask a further four or five to hang around.

LC

Just did the math. They probably end up having at least 43 players over there.

Test Squad
Harris
Burns
Khawaja
Smith
Patterson
Head
Paine
Cummins
Pattinson
Lyon
Hazlewood

Warner
Handscomb
Stoinis
Starc
Siddle
J Richardson
O'Keefe

World Cup Squad

Finch
Maxwell
Carey
Zampa
S.Marsh
Behrendorff
Coulter-Nile

County Cricket contracts
Labuschagne
Bancroft
Worrall
Renshaw
Ferguson

A Team

Hughes
Larkin
Doolan
Pucovski
Henriques
M Marsh
Wade
Copeland
Tremain
Boland
Holland
Bird
Steketee
Phillippe
Swepson

And I'm sure there'll be plenty of other scrubs playing over there at the time hoping for a Shaun Young call up too.

Can we talk about Lambo's run for Glamorgan? - finishes with 1114 runs at 65.52 with 5 hundreds and 5 fifties.

I feel like he has pushed his way into that 6 spot, Head has continued his good run so he stays at 5, Smith walks in at 4, pending fitness Khawaja or KP at 3? I feel bad for KP not having him as a lock after his great hundred last Test, but I just can't see how you ignore Lambo doing it in the UK with ease.

I think he has to be in the squad now - those runs are against division 2 bowling attacks which may count against him.

Might come down to KP, Wade or Lambo for the number 6 spot pending Khawaja's fitness.

Newscorp journalist Robert Craddock has named his preferred Australian XI for the opening Ashes Test against England.

Australia’s line-up remains unclear with several spots up for grabs ahead of the series opener at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Cameron Bancroft has stormed into contention after his unbeaten 93 in the intra-squad match, while the likes of Matthew Wade, Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh are vying for the No.6 position that was previously held by Kurtis Patterson.

Many expect Victorian quick James Pattinson to play some part in the series at the expense of either Mitchell Starc or Josh Hazlewood.

Speaking on SEN’s Whateley, Craddock named the side he would like to see take the field for the opening Ashes Test:

David Warner
Cam Bancroft
Usman Khawaja
Steve Smith
Travis Head
Matthew Wade
Tim Paine
Pat Cummins
James Pattinson
Nathan Lyon
Josh Hazlewood or Mitch Starc (depending on the wicket)

Fair bloody playActually think England have bowled quite poorly to Smith for the most part, they clearly know he's the key, they struggle to get him out and now they're try to do too much.

Didn't get to watch any of the match last night but numbers wise, Siddle looks to have done quite well. Lowest run rate on his bowling with a wicket. Again, from numbers alone it looks like he's pulling his weight, or at least on level to the others.

Again, from numbers alone it looks like he's pulling his weight, or at least on level to the others. The wicket he got was a fluke one hander caught and bowled. Absolutely no movement in the air or off the pitch, which is apparently his special quality in England. Yeah he's been tight, but they don't exactly need to hit him either.

My issue with Siddle is multi-faceted. You've literally got a better version of him in Neser riding the pine, if it was him playing I'd have less of an issue with it. You've got Hazlewood who is our English specialist who was rested for the World Cup to have him in tip top shape for this Ashes series and then is left out completely.

yeah_nah
3rd August 2019, 05:17 PM
Siddle was tight and that's more than you can say about Cummins or lyon. I think that's siddles role but do agree haze would do the same while offering some threat.

Both Cummins and lyon as you said bowled very impatiently and never let pressure build. There was always a loose one on the pads to get some runs away, by 50 I reckon burns scoring areas were through slips and on the leg side, maybe one straight that he got onto. Disgraceful.

Patto a little loose too but looked a little more dangerous than the others.

Pattinson absolutely shocking with the second new ball. Was like watching a right arm Starc.

Red Neville
3rd August 2019, 08:16 PM
My take is a bit different, it was frustrating sure but they didn't bowl that badly. England were very cautious and even luckier than usual. Lyon in particular was causing them a lot of trouble.

It would have been nice to turn to a Haze or Starc for the breakthrough but then again they might have gone after one of them and relieved the pressure a bit. They couldn't do that with any of these, even Patto's supposedly poor new ball spell (that WTF first delivery aside :drake: )

The desperation stuff from Wade and Head wasn't great though, we might as well have shouted ALL RIGHT ENGLAND, WE GIVE UP.

If we can get this weird arsed edgy prick out early today it looks very different.

I'm not too bothered with the late wicket partnerships. We managed to do the same to save the match. So long as they don't get 150 ahead we are still in this for a draw which is the minimum we should be aiming for. After the first two abysmal sessions of day 1, taking it to day 5 is the best we could have hoped for.

Red Neville
4th August 2019, 02:37 AM
I think that's fair on reflection. England delighted with an 80 lead, they wanted more than that at stumps yesterday that's for fucking sure.

A nice steady 300 and a bit with everyone contributing would be lovely. But this is Straiya, it's not how we roll :drake:
