View Full Version : Australia v England: Second Ashes Test @ Adelaide Oval (2-6 December)

Rumblah

Rain around Adelaide seems to have moved on looking at the radar, so I'm quite hopeful of a full days play. Always keen to see how fragile both our own and the English players batting technique and a pink ball under lights is the perfect weapon for it. We're heading in un-changed barring any late slip-ups and the English are reportedly making one change with Ball coming out for a debuting Overton. Overton looks to have a better record but didn't do particularly well against CA XI so I'm gonna say he sucks for now. Leggo!

Big, big call by Root to bowl first. Smith just confirmed he would have chosen to bat first.

which prompted me make some depressing discoveries regarding our ashes form in the last 10 years

5 series

some of the dismissals were fucking average - in particular BOTH of Warners - but nonetheless, only 4 down is good stuff. Keen to see Hazle & co. bowl in the last session tomorrow, when we have 400 on the board (H)

Honestly, this could very well be the "you dropped the ashes" moment of the series not making them follow on. I was gobsmacked when I saw our batsmen come out. Honestly, the one HUUUUUUGE chance for England to get back in the series is at Adelaide and under lights where the dewy cooler air will mean it swings all over the place. At night is the only time we dont want to bat against England because they are the ideal conditions for them and we willingly send ourselves into their perfect conditions!? I realise he wants to keep the bowlers fresh but that was an appalling decision. Is this going to lift them for the rest of the series when we could have been offering them the final kick in the nuts?

God fucking damn it Smitty. I fucking love you like only another man can but get your captaincy shit together. To me that stinks of a boof decision but meh, as the BT commentators say, "its the modern game choice" even when it logically makes no sense.,

Depends how long our middle order/tail last here. Its not just the fact that England are bowling at night. Its that they're bowlers are fresh as well. If we get out cheaply, then we probably will need to bowl 30+ overs before night and we will therefore be far less effective than them.

You may say then whats the difference than if we had enforced the follow on given our bowlers would need to bowl after being in the field all day. But we are handing over momentum here for free. And I would much rather be having our bowlers get through the night with the follow on, the runs on the board and us batting second, even if they went after us, than to be giving England a very good chance of winning the game. Basically, I would prefer to be bowling tonight than tomorrow night.

If we get out early tomorrow - Australia's bowlers were pretty effective during the day today. They took 7 wickets today before the last session...

Scarcity mentality thinking we needed to bowl tonight. Even make another 100 tomorrow, and they are chasing 370 with fresher bowlers, and a night session to come.

Khawaja's and Starc's 20 is the lowest highest score in a completed Ashes Adelaide Test innings. Previous: 23, JJ Lyons, way back in 1891-92, when Aus made 100.

5th December 2017, 05:02 PM
England are looking to become just the second team in Test history to pull off a successful run chase having conceded a lead of 200 or more on the first innings.
Australia's batting collapse in Adelaide has left the tourists needing an unlikely 354 for a series-levelling win, a daunting victory target but one that is far smaller than they would have expected when they conceded a 215-run deficit after their first innings.

They are saying it's 40 times over the allowed level. It's more like 120-200 times in reality.

India pretty much own Sri Lankan cricket, so they just would have done what they were told

Even CA probably wouldn’t stand up to them

Those conditions are a disgrace though. Not just for cricket, imagine living in it pretty much everyday...

I agree it's annoying they're still squirming a bit but that's 20/20 hindsight.

We still control this match. Therefore all but the series.

How is it 20/20 hindsight when a number of ex-players (and ex-captains) were questioning the decision even before our collapse? Its not rocket science. England's only real threat to us is when the ball is swinging. We put ourselves in to bat at night when the ball is swinging. Bad decision.

Who knows what would have happened in that alternate reality where we enforced the follow on. But one thing that wouldn't be happening is England being in a position to win it.

If England actually do play him I hope he's in the middle of his innings when the police announce they're charging him with assault.

Would the police walk out onto the pitch and arrest him then and there?
